At first I prayed for light:
Could I but see the way,
How gladly, swiftly would I walk
To everlasting day!
And next I prayed for strength:
That I might tread the road
With firm, unfaltering feet, and win
The heavens’ serene abode.
And then I prayed for faith:
Could I but trust my God,
I’d live infolded in His peace,
Though foes were all abroad.
But now I pray for love:
Deep love to God and man;
A living love that will not fail,
However dark His plan.
And light and strength and faith
Are opening everywhere!
God waited patiently until
I prayed the larger prayer.

कि मैं सड़क पर चल सकता हूं
दृढ़, अनफॉलो करने वाले पैरों के साथ, और जीत
स्वर्ग का निर्मल निवास.
और फिर मैंने विश्वास के लिए प्रार्थना की:
क्या मैं अपने भगवान पर भरोसा कर सकता हूं,
मैं उनकी शांति में डूबा रहा,
हालांकि सभी विदेश में दुश्मन थे.
लेकिन अब मैं प्यार के लिए प्रार्थना करता हूं:
भगवान और आदमी को गहरा प्यार;
एक जीवित प्रेम जो विफल नहीं होगा,
हालाँकि उसकी योजना डार्क है.
और प्रकाश और शक्ति और विश्वास
हर जगह खुल रहे हैं!
भगवान ने धैर्यपूर्वक इंतजार किया
मैंने बड़ी प्रार्थना की.
